I received an internet abuse notice. What does this mean?

What is this notice?

ATC Communications occasionally receives automated security notifications from external network operators indicating that unusual or unsolicited network traffic was observed coming from an IP address assigned to a customer account. These reports may come from:

  • Internet service providers
  • Hosting or cloud service providers
  • Enterprise or institutional networks
  • Security monitoring organizations

They are part of normal internet operations and are shared so potential issues can be addressed.

What this notice does not mean

Receiving this notice does not mean:

  • You intentionally did something wrong
  • Your internet traffic is being monitored by ATC
  • Your service is being disconnected
  • Your personal data has been accessed

These notices are informational.

What typically causes these notices?

The most common causes include:

  • Infected or outdated devices connected to the network
  • Devices using default or weak passwords
  • Outdated firmware on routers, cameras, DVRs, or smart devices
  • Software or devices attempting automated internet connections
  • Misconfigured equipment exposing services to the internet

In residential environments, this activity is almost always automated and unintentional.

What should I do?

Most customers can resolve these issues by taking a few basic steps:

  • Update firmware on internet-connected devices
  • Change default passwords on smart devices
  • Run antivirus or malware scans on computers
  • Disconnect or replace devices you no longer use

If you are unsure which device may be involved, a technician or IT professional can often help identify the source.

Do I need to contact ATC?

You only need to contact us if:

  • You receive repeated notices over time
  • You believe the activity is legitimate (for example, business servers or testing)
  • You would like assistance understanding next steps

In most cases, no response is required once devices are updated and secured.

Does ATC monitor my internet traffic?

No. ATC does not inspect customer internet traffic for abuse-related content. These notices are generated by external organizations based on activity observed on their own networks.

Could my service be affected?

If security-related activity continues for an extended period and is not addressed, ATC may take action under our Terms & Conditions to protect the network. This typically occurs only after multiple notices and attempts to contact the customer.
