Netflix – How Much Internet Do I Actually Need?

If you’re tired of hefty satellite TV bills, then you’re not alone.  Millions of people worldwide have “cut the cord” so to speak, dumping traditional cable and satellite TV for cheaper, commitment free options.  Netflix, the leader in online video streaming, has over 48 million subscribers worldwide.  With numbers like that, it’s safe to assume that video streaming is more than just a trendy fad, it’s a TV viewing phenomenon that allows you to watch the shows you want, at a price you can actually afford.

Netflix, and other video streaming providers, use your internet to connect you to their ginormous library of movies and TV series — available right on your own TV.  So, how much Internet do you need?  First, it’s important to understand that you’re probably going to need an unlimited internet package.  One with no limits to how much you use, and one that doesn’t “throttle” (or intentionally reduce) your speed if you watch too much TV. (Luckily for you, all of ATC’s internet packages are unlimited and we NEVER throttle speeds 🙂

Next, you’ll need to decide how FAST your broadband connection needs to be.  Here’s how it works: Netflix automatically adjusts the quality and resolution of your show to match your available bandwidth. This means if you have a slow internet connection, you’ll have very low quality video, and your TV will stall or “buffer”.  In contrast, if you have fast, and consistent internet, you can watch two movies at once – in HD resolution or even 3D content! You can catch up on all of Netflix’s speed recommendations here.  We typically recommend a minimum 6 Mb connection in order to watch one high definition feed. If you want to watch two movies at once, you should subscribe to our 10, 15, or 20 Mb speeds. (We’ve recently dropped our prices on our faster speeds, too!)

“Cutting the cord” and going to Netflix is easier than you think.  You don’t need to buy a new TV.  Your existing TV just needs a small box or “stick” (such as a Roku or Chromecast) to work with Netflix.  Check out the most popular solutions here.
